The Beggar Opera John Gay 9781161457407 Books
It's got the full text, which is what I wanted.Of course, being an uber-cheap Dover edition, it's got some weirdnesses--like the play comes to an end, it's got the endpapers... and then it starts again on like page 21 and goes to the end AGAIN... lol

The Beggar Opera John Gay 9781161457407 Books Reviews
The Penguin edition of John Gay's Beggar's Opera is indeed a fine piece of work - at least, the edition in paperback edited by Treadwell and Loughrey has terrific footnotes and a fine introductory essay that places The Beggar's Opera in the context of its time. The context includes not only information about the Italian operas that it parodies, but about the real people such as Jonathan Wild, the thief-taker, on whom Mr. Peachum was modeled, and Robert Walpole, the Georgian power broker and womanizer who was the original of Captain Macheath. Fascinating. The dark Satanic mills of Blake's time originated in Georgian times, in the east London of Hogarth's gin mills, which were an economic stimulus pure and simple, to benefit the rich by encouraging the degeneracy of the poor. Your appreciation of Gay's ironic opera will be enhanced by knowing this background.
But you will NOT find it in this edition, which as far as I can tell from the sample, has ONLY the text, no footnotes (footnotes are quite clarifying unless you are an expert in street argot of the time) and no introductory essay. BLEAH. Why does persist in putting reviews of one edition to work to sell something else that is quite inferior?
If you want JUST the text, get the freebie. This isn't worth $3.
I ordered "THE BEGGARS OPERA" assuming it was in fact an "OPERA SCORE". I've ordered many from here and Ebay, because I'm an Opera singer. I say this only to confirm I know what an opera score is and looks like. Instead I received an old small grey paperback book, which was for an acting high school class.,
It was very disappointing. I must mention it took extra long to receive it, I contacted seller, and they said they had no way of tracking my item!
I never heard this before from any other sellers I have dealt with. So I contacted Seller again telling them, this is certainly not what was listed, and the picture was completely different. I was expecting a complete opera score "TO LOOK LIKE THEIR PICTURE LISTED ON I said this is false advertising!! "THE SELLER HAS BLAMED AMAZON FOR EVERYTHING, as for the reason they couldn't track my package. THE SELLER BLAMED AMAZON FOR ME RECEIVING THE WRONG ITEM. I said, "excuse me, but you listed this item, and you sent it out late, and you knew you were sending the WRONG ITEM! You looked at it, packed it, and mailed it out, full well knowing it was the wrong item. You posted a completely different picture.
They kept putting the blame and responsibility on . I don't believe that to be true.
The seller would not send me back a prepaid postage label for me to return item. Such audacity ! This was so frustrating, because I needed the opera score, and counting on it, and then I receive the wrong book! It is absolutely useless to me. Because they have been very difficult to deal with, I just opt for the AMAZON GIFT CARD, otherwise I would have to wait almost 2 weeks to resolve this case. It is not worth my time or effort. As far as I am concerned this seller is on my "NEVER TO BUY FROM" again. I don't want future buyers to go through this. We are here to help each other, as customers. Remember "the customer is always right?"
Very good read. Purchased for a course. Would purchase from seller again.
The book arrived ok and it was not dammaged at all
I read the Begger's Opera in the pass.
Not sure why this is not free, seeing as how the book has public domain for a century or two, but the price is affordable, so what the heck.
Originally, I was not thrilled on reading this book. The book was assigned to me in my British studies class and I was not looking forward to it. However, I was pleasantly surprised at two things. First, it was short read and easy to comprehend. Last, it was really funny! John Gay's writing is tough yet flowery, which I love. I'm glad I did read this book because now I want to read some more of his work. On the contrary, this would be strictly for enjoyment purposes.
It's got the full text, which is what I wanted.
Of course, being an uber-cheap Dover edition, it's got some weirdnesses--like the play comes to an end, it's got the endpapers... and then it starts again on like page 21 and goes to the end AGAIN... lol
